Xmas Party

We battled the early rain for a festive and competitive evening of bowls, burgers and beverages.

Much fun was had. The Man would like to thank everyone who attended for making it so fun as well as treating the venue and staff with dignity and respect.

Where should we go next year?

Crew of the Weeks

Gabriel Stibio
Zac Hewatt

The Man would like to extend a personal thanks from your customer who put forward their views that you went well and truly above and beyond. It sounds like a very enjoyable day at work.

“The boys were incredible. They worked so hard and efficiently and still had time for some great banter and chats. They made what is a very stressful day way easier and we want to thank them both personally for working so hard and being such great blokes! I really hope we don’t have to move any time soon, but if we do we’re 110% going to be using you guys. Please extend a personal thanks to the guys. Cheers - and please tell me where I can get some man with a van socks.”

Toolbox Meeting

Tim Bishop is full of public speaking energy at the crack of dawn.

At 7am on Tuesday, 30 January, The Abbotsford depot hosted it's monthly toolbox meeting.

What is a toolbox meeting I hear you ask? Great question.

A toolbox meeting is a glorified staff meeting where all staff are treated to status reports on all the important aspects of the business: Transport Workers Union, OHS Committee, Management, & most importantly staff events.

The Abbotsford toolbox meetings are held on the last Tuesday of every month.

Boot Camp

Which safety shoe works best for you?

A guide to choosing the right protective shoe from the winner of the 2022 Gold Liftie™ and guest contributor, Anthony "Barnacle" Perry

If you're always on your toes or perhaps more solid footed, this may affect the style of boot your tootsies need. The following is a list of pros and cons of the different styles as well as some sage advice from seasoned wearers of the fabled steel capped safety shoe.

Boot Camp

High Top - laces and zip

Personal favourite of of a few workers here. Offers ample ankle support, generally waterproof and the zipper helps with quick removal. The downside being the larger boot can be a heavier shoe that can feel clunky and less flexible on the ankle for squats. Doesn't breathe well. Will be hot in Summer but warm in Winter.

Boot Camp

High Top - slip on

Easy to slip on and off, slightly less ankle support, can be clunky, medium flexibility for ankles during squats. The elastic wears out quicker and the window to being warn out after being warn in is quite small. Doesn't breathe well. Will be hot in Summer but warm in Winter.

Boot Camp

Low Top - with laces

Halfway between a high top and a runner style.

Lighter than a full size boot, no ankle support, generally water proof, more ankle flexibility for squats.

Doesn't breathe well. Will be hot in Summer but warm in Winter.

Boot Camp

Runner - with steel cap

A lighter protective shoe, flexible and breathes well. Best for those always on their toes.

More ankle flexibility for squats but generally not waterproof. Doesn't last as long as boots. Cool in Summer and cool in Winter.

General Advice

Once you've chosen a style of shoe just get a cheap pair from a shop like Big W or K-mart as just a tester, they’re usually all under $100 and won't last as long. Then once you've found a style that works for you, upgrade to a more expensive pair from a safety clothes and workwear shop like Bunnings, RSEA or the like.

When getting your new boot its good to get a half a size or size above what you normally get, this gives extra space around the toe to avoid blisters and calluses. also wearing thick work socks adds to your comfort. If selecting a High top with laces keeping them tight helps to keep the ankle back and space at the front of the toe.

After getting a brand new pair, wear them outside of work to get used to them and loosen them up. Walking up 5x flights of stairs should not be your first time wearing them.

Foot hygiene is also important. Always wearing clean socks and washing your feet with antibacterial soap helps avoid the dreaded dank boot foot especially in a boot that doesn't breath as well.

Keep It Clean

Getting a little dust and gunk on your hands is an inevitability in the moving game.

While it doesn't matter so much when you're shifting boxes or packing up the truck, when handling items such as mattresses, white goods or the dreaded white leather sofa, it's sure to leave a mark.

Please remember to wash your hands if you notice they're dirty to avoid leaving behind nasty marks and stains.

Fix the Fleet

Our ramp manufacturer prepping for another day at the grindstone.

Sharp ramp? If your ramp is sharper than a butcher's knife, tell Richie so he can dull the pain.

How do you tell Richie?

Text it in

You simply must.

This one still remains an issue so before heading off in the morning, please text in who you are, who your partner is, and which truck you are taking.

Aside from making Sascha & Dylan's job much easier throughout the day, it's also for record keeping purposes. Driving logs and truck swaps are our primary way of knowing who was driving which vehicle on what date.

This is important since in the event we receive a speeding fine for a truck, the first point of contact will be whoever we have logged as the driver in the system.

As fines can sometimes take months to be processed and mailed to us, if you can't recall which vehicle you were driving on a Tuesday in mid January, you might just end up copping a fine without being certain if it was you or not.

Got Mates?

Yes, you!

As always, MWAV is looking for movers, both at Abbotsford and Cranbourne depots.

If you have any mates who are looking for work and would fit the lifting lifestyle, have them apply online and be sure to let them know to mention your name.

The MWAV buddy bounty remains in place, if your mate makes it through 3 months, we'll add $200 cold hard cash to your pay.

The Damage

Friday, 26th January - Thursday, 8th February

Damage Reports Submitted - 15 😓

Claims Without Damage Reports - 1 😔

---

An overall improvement on the damage numbers over last issue. Still a pesky unreported instance of damage leaves a bad smell on an otherwise decent damage turnout.

The Vibe

The massive amount of 5 star reviews say it all, amazing work everyone. Melburnians are very much picking up what you're putting down (vibe wise, not the furniture).
